Brand of the Month - Penfolds

If asked for the top winery is in Australia, most people say Penfolds. Penfolds could be daily beverages or investment-grade wines. It’s seen everywhere from the supermarket shelves to the fine wine racks of wine connoisseur collections. Penfolds’ numbered bin series is iconic. The numbers bear no relation to quality or price but just bin numbers. For instance, Bin 23 is Pinot Noir from Adelaide Hills, Bin 138 is a Shiraz’s blend. Bin 150 is an outstanding Barossa Shiraz awarded 95 points by James Suckling. When you discover a Penfolds wine you like, simply remember the number and it’s no fuss to repeat the purchase.

Apart from the bin numbers, Penfolds loves to name its wines after the vineyards or landmarks. The world-renowned “Grange” is named after a stone cottage the founders lived in and some wines are named after vineyards, such as Robert Parker’s highly rated Magill Estate or the popular Koonunga Hill. Their innovative moves include Lot 518 that blends Shiraz with Chinese Baijiu.

Penfolds RWT Braossa Valley Shiraz 2017

Stunning blueberries and mulberries here with a wealth of baking spices and red berries, as well as tarry notes and blackberries. It is all here. The palate has a super plush, rich and quite compressed tannin feel. Some firm and powerful moments, as the palate builds with plentiful spiced summer berries. Red plums and blackberries to close.

Penfolds Reserve Bin A Adelaide Hills Chardonnay 2016

Very light pale straw. More citrusy than normal with lemon meringue and preserved lemon notes. And yet still harbouring typical Adelaide Hills white nectarine aromas alongside yeast lees/oak-derived complexing characters, almond nougat. Lemon and citrus conceded, however, a more pronounced grapefruit pith character assumes control of palate-obliging a round, mouth-coating, softened phenolic texture.
