On the French bank of the Rhine River, protected by the mass of the Vosges Mountains, lies the superb winegrowing area of Alsace. One of the oldest villages here is Eguisheim-known as the "cradle" of Alsatian viticulture; great wines have been produced here since the Fourth Centery.
The tradition of family in winemaking is strong in Alsace, engineries have passed from father to son, for centuries. Among the finest of these wineries is the House of Leon Beyer of Eguisheim, formal records of which exist from 1580.
